High Speed Internet - Siga Siga!
I should explain for those who don't know us, that both Richard and I are by trade teachers - he, programming and I teach IT. We use the computer a great deal, especially the internet and I am in a very small way, setting up website. I took an online TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course earlier this year to widen my skills base.
We got a phone line within a matter of a week of moving into the (temporary) apartment while the house is being built. Quickly got on the internet too. No broadband in this neck of the woods but there is, apparently, ISDN. Only they didn't have any modems. Between May 23rd, when we got the phone, and 12th August I haunted the Post Office. "Ohi", shake of the head. No, we couldn't buy one elsewhere and install it ourselves. All conversations are conducted in a mixture of Greek and English as the kind people who work there are extremely tolerant of my newly learning Greek. We heard on the grapevine early July from the architect that the modems were in. I went to the post office.
"Ohi".
I went in the first week of August and was told "next week".
8th August. "end of the week" "Thursday?" I asked.. Shrugs, "maybe. issos". I asked the lady if I could put my name on a list. She sent me to the man in his office and he filled in a form for me. It was added to the (rather large) pile.
I went in Thursday. "tomorrow.. avrio".
8.45 the next day, Friday I was in there. smiling hopefully. Lady behind the counter said I needed to speak to "the boss" whose office was empty. Her colleague sniggered and repeated "the boss" with an exclamation mark. So I hung around and in a couple of minutes in he came. I followed him into his little glass cage and smiled hopefully. He said "later". more
